Kari Gillenwater, MD/MPH (Pediatrician)

Dr. Gillenwater is a board certified pediatrician and holds a Master's degree in Public Health. In addition to her work with the Harborview Foster Care Clinic, she serves patients at UW Neighborhood Kent / Des Moines Clinic. She has extensive experience working with at-­risk and foster care youth, as well as performing child welfare evaluations in emergency care.  Dr. Gillenwater particularly enjoys partnering with caregivers to provide the highest quality care for her patients.

Candice Small, PhD (Psychologist)

Dr. Candice Small is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, with a doctorate in School Psychology from the University of Washington. Currently, she is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Her clinical responsibilities at Harborview include assessment and treatment in the Harborview Foster Care Clinic. She has experience working with children and families adjusting to trauma and other adverse childhood experiences. She provides evidence-based treatments for anxiety, depression, and trauma exposure. She strives to work collaboratively with caregivers and families to identify strengths and challenges in order to help every child succeed.

Melissa Cohen, RN (Nurse Coordinator)

Melissa Cohen joined the Harborview Foster Care team in February 2022.  She is a certified pediatric nurse who recently served as an RN-MHP on the Program for Assertive Community Treatment and has also worked as a school nurse. Melissa is incredible with organization and with children of all ages --she is a valuable asset to the Foster Care clinic.
